Reflections on 'Mixed Within'

I started by sketching two different thumbnail compositions to experiment with the placement of the egg — one vertical and one horizontal. I chose the vertical composition, with three cracked eggs, since it had more dimension and a more interesting arrangement of the eggs.

I then sketched the individual cracked eggs in more detail while observing my reference photo. I used gouache for a smooth, bright base, then added darker values and smaller details with colored pencil.

After completing the eggs, I experimented with adding abstract faces and eyes to the mixed yolks and whites. Rather than smooth touches, I used rough brush strokes and thicker paint to create abstract textures that contrast with the realistic eggs.

The mix of yolk and white is a symbol for mixed identity and the way emotions and experiences overlap. Through this process, I explored my AP 2D inquiry into personal identity as a process of transformation, using two different styles — realism and abstraction.
