Once upon a Time

Oil paint on canvas

18" × 20"

When visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I saw the works of Claude-Louis Châtelet and Jacques-Louis David, who painted many nature scenes in order to petition Napoleon and the French government to preserve France's forests. Ultimately they succeeded — which led me to reminisce about my rural hometown of Cheonan, just south of Seoul, South Korea. It used to be a similar pristine, untouched forest, but underwent rapid development during my childhood. This piece is a tribute to an alternate reality that now only exists in memory.
